Secure your gear without losing bed functionality
By the staff of Trucks & Guns Magazine
Whether we are working or playing out of the bed of our truck, we find ourselves buying bins, tool boxes, dividers and whatever else to try to keep everything organized and safe, plus strapping everything down so it does not slide around or get stolen. Those of you with camper shells do not have to worry (as much) about stuff being stolen or getting wet but then you have to deal with climbing into the back of the truck to get that box that slid all the way to the front. When you are tired of putting everything in bins and tool boxes that are always in the way when hauling loads, what do you start to look at?
Truck bed drawers, right? Drawers will solve all your problems, yes? Well, here is the problem with most truck bed drawers: they are heavy, they are square so they do not wrap around the fenders, they use metal slides that clog up with dirt and many were not designed to hold a load on top. Up until a few years ago that was all that was available off the self. We have seen many custom drawer systems that solve these problems but for those of us that do not own the tooling or have the time, what is available? DECKED is available (www.decked.com). We were intrigued from the first few pictures we saw of the DECKED system. Deep drawers, smooth sliders, lockable, water tight, full upper deck and the best part 2000 pound load capacity on top with 200 pounds in booth drawers.
HOW THEY DID IT
The whole DECKED system is made of 100% recycled high-density polyethylene. A large center beam supports the inner drawer slide channel and the top deck. The outer drawer channel is supported by the corner “Ammo Cans”. The “Ammo Cans” are also what holds the DECKED system in the truck. They use large J-hooks to attach to the factory bed tie downs. This allows the DECKED system to secure into the truck with no modifications to the truck. It also makes installation easy and if you need to remove the unit, removal is easy. The drawers use large wheels and bearings to slide smoothly through the channels, providing a near maintenance and worry free drawer slide. The drawers are full bed length and have moveable dividers to give you many organization options. The top is made with a steel sub-frame molded into the high-density polyethylene to build a very strong and durable deck on top of the drawer system. Each top deck is built to fit the side of the beds contours perfectly to minimize the gap between the top deck and the bedside. This not only provides a clean installation but also prevents items from dropping below the drawer system. It is impressive how close the top deck follows the contours of the bed sides without touching the sides. It is not a super tight fit, very small rocks and nails can slip through the small gap but any tighter and the deck would rub the sides of the bed.
The full-length drawers pull out 48” giving you easy access to anything you have stored inside. The drawers do not pull out the full bed length for safety and weight reasons. They include dividers that allow you to separate your gear into sections and stop items from moving around too much. The dividers have a notch in the top of them to allow long skinny items like fishing poles or 2x4s to slide along the top of your other gear. 200 pounds of gear potential at easy access, and you could even use it as a cooler, with the optional drain plug. DECKED has also recently introduced an optional removable tool box to fit perfectly into the drawers. The system allows you to be ready for work or play no matter where you are. You can feel comfortable leaving all of your gear inside the drawers year round. The drawers are waterproof and lockable but not dust proof so keep that in mind. The large grab handles / latches are designed to pull the water seal in tight to the deck and are large enough to operate with gloves on. In the area around the wheel wells there are the “Ammo Can” that can also hold other gear but these are not lockable or water tight.
PULL THE TRIGGER
As long as you do not have a gooseneck trailer there is no reason you should not have this in your truck. Every truck would benefit from the DECKED system because after you install this system you can still use your truck bed as you normally would. Only now you have a lockable, watertight drawer system in your bed. The durable high density polyethylene will handle anything you can throw at it better than you truck bed alone would and it is UV light stable, as well as can handle extreme heat and cold. They have a DECKED system available for most full size trucks, all backed with a three year limited warranty. www.decked.com
